Portland's a basketball crazy town, but there is such as thing as a home court disadvantage.
The other day I was showing homes in a SW neighborhood where the properties tend to have lots of land. My client had seen pictures of this property online, but one picture that was never taken and a surprise to my buyer was of the existing basketball court in the backyard.
The basketball court was not a selling point. Instead, it was a detractor. As I've said before, personal touches are fine, but there is such a thing as over-customizing a home. And to paraphrase one blog reader on this topic, "They built their dream house and wanted us to buy it."
Unless you're going to be in a home forever, which few people are, big custom projects can severely limit the pool of buyers when it comes time for re-sale.
