Today Post::Ginger Fish Swimming Out of Atwater Village

Sorry for the delay over the last few days chickens…Your Mama’s big ol‘ backside unexpectedly landed in an internet free land and it was, we regret to inform, simply too difficult to get to an internet cafe. These things sometimes happen.

YOUR MAMAS NOTES: While combing through listings in some of the less pricey zip codes around Los Angeles, Your Mama recently came upon one described as a “Charming 1929 Two Story Spanish Estate Home.” With that description, we jumped in feet first where we found that listing photos show a slew of framed up CDs leaning up on the mantel and hung on the wall over a grotesque, ca-ca colored leather sofa in the living room. Even though we recoiled in horror over the college student day-core, we got still got that special tingly feeling in our spleen that tells us we’re looking at a celebrity owned property. So we did what we always do, we started sifting through the property records. It didn’t take more than a minute or two to discover the casa is owned by a man named Kenneth Wilson who is otherwise known as Ginger Fish. It took a few more minutes to figure out that Ginger Fish is the oft injured drummer for the macabre, theatrical and con! troversy courting rock star Marilyn Manson. A few more taps on our trusty lap top computer revealed that Mister Wilson, er Mister Fish, listed his Atwater Village property in late August of 2009 with a somewhat wonky asking price of $1,096,000.

According to Wikipedia–which isn’t always the most reliable source of information–Mister Fish’s stage name is derived from a combination of the names of dancer Ginger Rogers and Albert Fish, “an American serial killer, cannibal and pedophile,” Is any further personal information about this man necessary to get a firm handle on his inner essence and sense of humor? No, it’s really not, is it?

Property records show Mister Fish purchased the Sunnynook Drive domicile in October of 2004 for an undisclosed amount of money. The 3 bedroom and 2 bathroom house is located in a modest section of Los Angeles called Atwater Village, a neighborhood with a Silver Lake zip code that borders Glendale, Elysian Valley, Glassell Park, Los Feliz, and the sprawling Griffith Park. Being the hub in a geographic wheel certainly makes Atwater Village accessible to and from many parts of the Tinseltown but, as far as Your Mama and the Dr. Cooter are concerned, it’s far to hot and smoggy for our delicate constitutions in that particular neck of the Lala Land woods.

From the looks of things, Mister Fish’s property is gated with a small motor court leading to a front door tucked up into the corner next to the garage. What little of the front facade we can see in the listing photographs looks satisfactory and appropriately Spanish. However, despite a mite of architectural integrity on the exteriors, once you get in the front door all decorative hell breaks loose.

Although listing information indicates that “countless upgrades” have been made to the property including newly refinished floors, a new air conditioning unit, newly installed tile in the kitchen and downstairs bathroom, a new fridge and a new front loading washer and dryer set up in a new laundry room located in the basement, the house is such a decorative hot mess that we don’t even know where to begin. Do we start with that ornate, carved, commode-like vanity thing in the bathroom? Or do we begin with the utterly awful satin quilt bed linens? Or maybe we should go with the taupe and burgundy patterned curtains that Your Mama could only describe as “Appalachia Chic,” the sort of drapery Dolly Parton might have aspired to before she actually got rich and figured out that rich people do not have curtains made of fabric that looks like it was ripped off a sofa bed from Levitz? Or will we be forced to embark on our jou! rney through Mister Fish’s interior trappings with all that crap sitting on top of the cabinets and refrigerator in the kitchen? What about the trio of water bottles in the bedroom that someone could not be bothered to remove before putting a million dollar asking price on the house? Or the fuzzy white stuffed animal sitting on the mantel in the bedroom? Ugh, it all makes Your Mama want to run bamboo shoots into our eyeballs. When we were just a wee thing our brassy and high-larious Auntie Jennie used to tell Your Mama, “If you don’t have something nice to say, come sit next to me.” But let’s be honest butter beans, sometimes picking apart bad day-core is like shooting a dead cat…it’s too easy and there’s really no benefit to doing so. Dead is dead.

However and despite our Auntie Jennie’s exhortation, Your Mama always tries to find some good to discuss even if we’re looking at a pile of decorative doo-doo so with some trepidation will say that with a few twists and tweaks–including removing the coffee table tsotchke and Mister Fish’s portrait of himself hanging over the fireplace–it really wouldn’t take much to work the living room over into something cozy and appropriate for the drummer of one of the world’s most illustrious rock stars.

Out back, Mister Fish’s house has a small balcony over looking the back yard which has a brick terrace and a some sort of stone floored shelter where he has set up a bunch of manly looking work out contraptions that scare the bizness out of Your Mama. We know that many people like to bend and stretch and lift and contort themselves into physical perfection, but larhrd have mercy, Your Mama would know better how to remove a gall bladder with a whisk and a spoon than to use all that forbidding and torturous gymnasium equipment.

Naturally, since Your Mama doesn’t know a hole in the ground from a tractor trailer, we haven’t an iota where Mister Fish and all his shiny linens, exercise apparati and water bottles will be moving next. However, if we may offer a little unsolicited advice to Mister Fish: Hunny, if you want to sell that house in Atwater Village for a million bucks, Your Mama suggests letting us send our imperious but hard working house gurl Svetlana over to spend a few days cleaning that place up so at least it looks as good as it can in listing photographs because the current ones, alas, ain’t doing you any financial favors. Do you know what we’re saying?

Today Post::Two Great Bounces!

The following charts provide a simple comparison between the big stock bounce that occurred in the wake of the DOW crash of 1929 and the bounce we are seeing today in the S&P 500 index.

The method of alignment was simple… take the first definitive up trading day off the bottom of the preceding bear market low and set that as the start of the series… then simply re-base both series to a value of 100 so that they can be compared side-by-side.

The lower bar chart plots the cumulative percentage change since the start of each bounce.

The S&P 500 is up over 42% in a little over 120 trading days… an historically aggressive run with an obvious note of mania to it… and wholly comparable to… yet notably stronger than… the price movement seen in the 1930s-era DOW rally.

At this point for the 30s-era DOW, the bull-run was over as the bear trend resumed in earnest… today though the Bull is seriously on the move… how long will this boom last?

Only time will tell… But for now, let's continue to keep a watchful eye…

Today Post::Mish Mash Friday

It’s been an eon since Your Mama did up a mish mash and today we finally have enough tidbits to work out something nice for the children.

1.
In late August of 2009, word on the celebrity real estate street was that actor and prolific property collector Nic Cage had two offers on his two-unit combination pied a terre at the Olympic Tower on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Today the ladees who pen the Wall Street Journal’s Private Properties column confirmed the rumor but, alas, had no other details of the alleged sale.

The 3,500 square foot, 48th floor unit first arrived on the market in July of 2008 but after a flurry of breathy press was immediately removed. It reappeared in November 2008 with an asking price of $9,750,000. Property records show Mister Cage picked up one of the units in 2004–for $3,800,000–and the other in 2005–for $1,700,000–and then rather haphazardly combined them in a wonky way that requires slipping through the playroom and traversing complicated hallways to get from one end of the apartment to the other.

The oddly configured corner condo has three entrances, two kitchens plus a wet bar, 2 bedrooms plus a “sleep area” and a windowless playroom, 7 closets and 3.5 poopers, not a one of which has a damn window for ventilation.

The children will recall that the Skidmore, Owings and Merrill designed Olympic Tower is the very same mixed-use building in which weapons dealer Adnan Khashoggi once owned an 18,000 square foot doo-plex on the 46th and 47th floors. Other residents of the bronze glass building include various and sundry international corporations, dignitaries and bizness people.

In other Nic Cage real estate news…It appears the scheduled September 24, 2009 auction for his white elephant in Bel Air–which put an opening bid at just $9,950,000–did not go as well as hoped because the Copa de Oro Road residence is back on the market with an asking price of $17,500,000. As far as we know, Mister Cage still has two houses in New Orleans on the market, as well as an island in the Bahamas, an ass-uglee mansion in Las Vegas and an historic, 27-acre estate in Middletown, RI. There are probably others, but we’re too damn worn out talking about Mister Cage’s real estate portfolio that we can’t be bothered to look.

Apparently, and until this morning unbeknownst to Your Mama, skeletal skinny singer Marc Anthony and his big-booty super star wife Jennifer Lopez recently purchased a minority stake in the Miami Dolphins football team. This might seem odd to the children, but the marketing powers that be at the Dolphins are making a bit of a habit of selling minority stakes to major celebrities. In late August, tennis titans Venus and Serena Williams also bought a minority stake as did the queen of Latin Pop (and Miami) Gloria Estefan and her man-mate Emilio.

Given Mister and Missus Jennifer Lopez’s new found interest (and stake) in the Miami Dolphins and according to the people at People, the Long Island based couple have reportedly forked over a few pennies for a condo at the three tower, Philippe Starck designed Icon Brickell condominium complex in downtown Miami.

It’s certainly not surprising that the Puerto Rican cantantes would want a base in Miami…they’ve both owned property in Miami in the past. However, Your Mama is a squinty eyed cynic and we can’t help but question this report. Although Mister Lopez is quoted as saying, “I bought a condo today in Miami,” he is also quoted as saying, “We are not selling our homes in New York or Los Angeles, we are just adding Miami.”

Here’s the thing butter beans: The couple have been trying to unload their Bel Air mansion since at least November of 2008 when they put it on the open market with an asking price of $8,500,000–it’s now listed at $7,900,000–a simple fact we’re sort of surprised the people at People did not mention or question Mister Lopez about.

So, like the folks at the South Beach Condos Blog, we’re gonna wait until we see some transfer records before we get convinced JLo and Mister Lopez are moving into a condo complex where only 30 (or so) of the 560+ units have closed. But then again, maybe a nearly empty building is exactly what the privacy seeking, security craving couple were after.

Like so many other professional athletes, retired basketballer Michael Jordan is a real estate size queen. According to the Palm Beach Post, Mister Jordon has applied to build a boo-teek hotel size house at the gated Bear’s Club golf community in Jupiter, FL.

The plans call for 37,942 square feet of living space with 26,000 square feet under air conditioning with 11 bedrooms, an as yet undetermined number of terlits, an elevator, guest cottage and a guard gate.

Mister Jordan forked over $4,800,000 for the two adjacent wooded parches that total approximately 3 acres and back up to the Jack Nicklaus designed golf course on Bears Club Drive. Building permit applications indicate he’s planning on spending (at least) another $7,627,669 to build the planned two story contemporary beast and according to the Palm Beach Post he’s already had most of the trees on the land bulldozed to make way for his hulking house.

Given that property records show Mister Jordan currently owns and occupies a 27,648 square foot contemporary spread with 17 terlits, an indoor basketball court, a putting green and a private damn lake on Point Lane in Highland Park, IL, is it really much of a surprise he wants something equally and unnecessarily elephantine in Florida?

4.
This week on tawdry and dee-voonly trashy reality program The Real Housewives of Atlanta, wigged out “singer” Kim Zolciak was given a bowling ball sized diamond engagement ring by “Big Poppa,” her still married sugar daddy man-friend who is widely rumored and reported to be large-living Atlanta, GA based real estate tycoon Lee Najjar.

We have no inside knowledge regarding the health or status of Mister Najjar’s marriage–Miz Zolciak claims he’s getting a dee-vorce–or whether that engagement ring is an actual engagement ring, but we do know that Mister Najjar recently hoisted his massive Atlanta mansion on the market with a knee buckling asking price of $25,000,000 (shown above).

The ornate and decadent W. Paces Ferry Road residence was built in 1914 with additional renovations and additions in 1921. The recently completed overhaul by Mister Najjar retained the original coral stone clad front facade and added a butt load of square footage to the rear of the house which now flanks and surrounds the swimming pool and spa. Listing information for the Buckhead behemoth indicates the 24,549 square foot mansion sits on a 2.05 acre parcel and includes 9 bedrooms, 11 full and 4 half poopers, 16 fireplaces, 7 full kitchens, garaging for 4 or more cars, lavish public rooms, a theater, smoking room, recording studio, ballroom, massage room, and a hair/nail salon because bee-hawtchas this rich and spoiled do not go to see the beautician, the beautician comes to them.

Listing photos of the property are slim but it wasn’t so long ago that Mister Najjar’s not very modest manse was featured on MTV Teen Cribs during which two of his youngest children Kaitlin and Jamen escorted cameras into all the excessively opulent nooks and crannies.

Today Post::Why do cities want the Olympics?

It puzzles me, given that Vancouver is facing serious financial issues for its forthcoming Olympics, why major cities care so much about getting them. Olympic games also make life inconvenient for those living and working in the cities where they take place. It is not like Chicago, Madrid, Rio and Tokyo aren’t high profile cities. Do we really think more highly about Atlanta because it had an Olympics?

I get permanent sports franchises–they become a source of common conversation in communities, and Carlino and Coulson show that people value this (although free agency and high ticket prices might screw this up). But the Olympics? I hear people talk around here about the 1988 Dodgers and Kirk Gibson’s home run all the time; I almost never hear about the 1984 Olympics.
